On Being a Thought Leader in the Technology Space: Reflections and Lessons Learned
Being seen as a “thought leader” in the technology space isn’t about big stages or grand gestures. For me, it’s been about sharing ideas, starting conversations, and sometimes challenging the way things have always been done.
It’s not always easy. Technology is one of those areas that can feel underappreciated until something goes wrong. Often, people just want things to work and don’t necessarily want to think about strategy or security in the background. That’s understandable—but it’s also where I’ve found my role as a thought leader to be most valuable.
Moving from “IT Guy” to Strategic Partner
When I started out, IT was seen as a service you called when something broke. And for a while, that worked. But over time I realised that businesses needed more than quick fixes—they needed guidance and strategy.
That shift—from fixing problems to helping leaders make proactive decisions—was where thought leadership really began for me. It meant saying, “Here’s what’s coming, here’s what we need to prepare for, and here’s how technology can enable your growth.”
The Challenges of Leading with Ideas
Not every idea lands. I’ve had plenty of times where I’ve spoken about cybersecurity frameworks, proactive planning, or Zero Trust security, only to be met with hesitation. Sometimes it feels like the message is a few steps ahead of where people are comfortable.
But that’s part of the process. Thought leadership isn’t about being the loudest voice in the room—it’s about showing up consistently, even when the conversation is tough.
Why I Keep Going
I’ve also seen what happens when those messages do resonate. I’ve watched businesses strengthen their systems, protect their people, and grow with confidence because they decided to take a proactive approach.
Those moments remind me why this work matters. It’s not about being recognised—it’s about making a difference for the businesses and communities I serve.
Lessons Along the Way
If I could sum up what I’ve learned so far, it would be this:
- People want to understand technology, but it has to be explained in a way that makes sense to them.
- Thought leadership is about being consistent and authentic, not flashy.
- The real job isn’t just solving problems—it’s helping people avoid them in the first place.
Looking Ahead
To anyone trying to build credibility and share ideas in the tech space: keep going. It’s not always easy, and it may not always be appreciated in the moment, but over time, it makes a real difference.
For me, being a thought leader isn’t about titles. It’s about being there for businesses when they need guidance, and helping them see that technology isn’t just a cost centre—it’s a foundation for growth and resilience.
